Friday Favorites : Apartment Edition

So now that moving is in full effect and I still have yet to get most of my furniture, I wanted to do a little before/after series on the blog every Friday. Although I don't have many photos of my place now I have a lot of ideas of things that need to be changed and revamped. Here are some of the things around the web that have been inspiring me. Pinterest is obviously has a plethora of photos to choose from, and I also love Elsie & Emma's series "At home with." I think what's been most inspiring for me is the fact that so many people do great things with the spaces they're given. The possibilities are endless, so when you get a whole place to yourself, you could go nuts! I am excited to share this journey and part of my life on the blog, as this is the first time I will be living completely on my own (no roommates-besides Oliver of course).

I love the idea of a simple apartment, that has just enough kitchiness to it that catches the eye. I love all of my vintage pieces so thinking about incorporating those is pretty exciting. I keep dreaming of ways to show off my camera collection, and my new 1960's fan. What sites do you guys use for inspiration?

Dreaming In Vintage

I have been going crazy browsing through ASOS's vintage and retro boutiques. I stumbled across the boutiques pretty much by accident while looking at their usual items on the website. I must say I found so many vintage dresses that are currently on my wishlist, and I figured since it's Friday, I can share them with you and maybe we can both do some shopping this weekend! My favorite trend for the spring/summer is short mini dresses with huge platforms, but also longer maxi dresses with a tiny jacket over them. Here are some of my favorite picks from the vintage boutiques on ASOS.

What are some of your favorite styles for spring & summer? Be sure to check our ASOS's boutiques for some great deals on vintage & vintage inspired clothing. They definitely have some great wardrobe staples for the upcoming months! Hope you guys have a great weekend!

Texas Style Council: Thrifting/Antiquing

One of my favorite things about Austin was definitely the shopping. I found so many little treasures in the thrift/antique shops on South Congress Street. One store reminded me of Etsy because there were so many handmade items, everything from stationary, to jewelry, to clothing. I definitely brought back some great items, and I can't wait to wear some of it in my future outfit posts. Here are some of my favorite photos from the days we spent walking in and out of the stores in the rain..

5 Thrifting Tips!

I promised this a few days ago but blogger & my internet were not cooperating so it got a bit delayed! I have wanted to do a post like this for a long time, but finally narrowed down what I think are the most important points regarding thrifting. My love for second hand shops & clothing has definitely grown in the past year, and I feel so much more comfortable knowing a few things, and not just going in blindly. Without further adieu here are some of my top 5 thrifting tips!

Most people don't enjoy buying from second hand stores because the items are "pre-used" and usually pretty worn in. Although this may bother some people, it's never really been an issue with me. Every time I go shopping at a thrift or consignment shop, I ALWAYS clean my items as soon as I get them home. Although most places clean them upon arrival, they still have a certain scent to them from sitting in piles of other clothing, or on dress racks. My number one rule as a shop owner, and personal shopper is that I either machine wash or dry clean the items I buy from pre loved shops. It's always nice having a fresh scent to your clothing so you can wear it proudly!

Size varies from brand to brand and even by eras. As a huge vintage lover I have realized that sizing from different eras is completely different than sizing nowadays. Go into a store knowing your own measurements(this also goes with buying vintage clothing online), this will help for stores that do not have fitting rooms..After a little bit of practice, you'll get to know and understand different eras & sizing, I am definitely getting better at it over time, and it's fun to know what's going to fit without trying it on!

Most local thrifting shops run daily-weekly specials. Our local goodwill has great deals for each day of the week! Depending on the day, you could even get 50% off certain items, and get a great deal! Most stores also offer cards that can track how much money you spend, with a certain amount you get money off your future purchases! My local goodwill has a special where if you spend $100 you get $10 off the following purchase! Over time this will make a huge difference, and save you money!

When buying used items or clothing sometimes they need a little bit of extra love, and that's why they were donated in the first place! This doesn't refer to every purchase but for the most part, the clothing may be missing a button, have a stain, or have a few loose threads here and there. Certain items look amazing when they are altered, and if you can pull it off; more power to you! If you understand how to fix or sew your items, then you should take on the challenge, if not then these items may not be for you, after all you don't want to add more clutter to your closet, especially if you never wear it!

When going to the thrift shop the other day I realized how many holiday inspired items they have! Certain stores will even donate certain items to thrift shops, to help out the community. You may even find items that are brand new, and still in the original packaging. This is great for holiday decorations, gifts, and even costumes. The best advice I can give with this point is that it's important to catch the holiday season items early. I wouldn't wait till the last week of October to look for Halloween items, and I am sure most Christmas items will peak near the end of November, so it's important to always be ahead of the game!

That's all for now, I hope you all enjoyed my thrifting tips! Where are your favorite thrift shops? Do you enjoy buying/wearing used clothing? I would love to hear your experiences with pre loved items!

Vintage Shopping NYC {Family Jewels Vintage}

Finally after all of the planning, I made it into Family Jewels Vintage. I was so excited to finally go in and take some photos of all the wonderful vintage items they have. I really fell in love with the whole shop, and although it is small, they have so many interesting and unique pieces. Here are some photos from my trip into this wonderful little shop on 23rd street in New York City.

I wish I could buy every purse on this shelf! SWOON!

Their costume jewelry was all in mint condition, and had such character to it.

I loved this throw pillow on one of the sofa chairs in the back.

The display of pins and scarves was so creative!

I absolutely fell in love with this skirt, unfortunately it was a little too small, I was heartbroken! Whoever gets this skirt will enjoy it, it's definitely a great piece!
I bought this cute little tapestry clutch for myself, it's in such great condition and is circa 1950's.

Brooklyn Flea.

This weekend Alex and I finally had a chance to go to the Brooklyn Flea at Fort Greene. We had such a good time, and enjoyed a beautiful day out in the sunlight! The flea has a plethora of vendors who sell antiques, antiqued furniture, homemade goods, vintage clothing & accesories, and of course fresh local food! What is better?! NOTHING! Here are some photos from our wonderful day...
