The Woman Project--Marilyn Monroe

A few months ago J from My Life in Lavender contacted me about participating in "The Woman Project." I gladly accepted especially because the premise is based around strong and independent women who are always remembered and still inspire people to this day. I chose to pick an outfit that is inspired by Marilyn Monroe.

Norma Jean Baker (professionally known as Marilyn Monroe) was one of the most interesting people I have ever read about. I have some of her personal diaries and memoirs and I am so amazed with everything I learn about her. Some of you may know that she was very troubled, and suffered a great deal with depression, anxiety and drug addiction. A great deal of her problems stemmed from never feeling "good enough" and not realizing her full potential. It's extremely sad that she felt she was merely a sex symbol, and nothing more. She is still known to be one of the most beautiful women that ever graced the silver screen, and I think she is a prime example for women nowadays. She was successful, beautiful and guess what ladies? She was not a size 2, she was a size 12. That just shows you that there is NO perfect size. Women can be beautiful in any size or shape.

I think part of the reason I chose her was because despite all of her beauty, popularity and fame, deep down she was still a normal human being, struggling with so many of the same things women struggle with on a daily basis.

"I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so you can learn to let go. Things go wrong so you can appreciate them when they're right. You believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself. And sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together. "

"We should all start to live before we get too old. Fear is stupid. So are regrets."

  2. I think you made an excellent choice choosing Marylin. It's so important for all females to realize they can be beautiful, stylish, etc., and still hold their own and be a symbol of strength and independence.

  6. I like Marilyn Monroe too. And like you I don't like her because it's "cool" to like her. I actually like her for the person (I believe) she was. I think she was one of the most strong woman ever. And she wasn't only beautiful and a sex symbol, I think she was and still is such an inspiring character for women all over the world. The outfit really reminds me of her too! You did a great job I say! :D

  13. Wow, I really loved this post. I'm very familiar with MM and think you nailed it on why she's so admired: she was so real when it came down to it and insecure, just like we all can be.
You look so adorable in this outfit. I am so smitten with the little bow on that romper!

  15. Love your look girl and we are all pretty in our variety of sizes!! I love that we are all unique and still all beautiful :) marlyin knew what to wear that suited her body and i think that is what dressing up is all about, just wear what suits you and what makes you feel great :)

Ps, love your glasses. I tried those on when I was getting my latest glasses and they totally did not suited my face shape so I went with the classic rayban wayfarer sunglasses with regular perscription lenses added in instead of sunglasses. Its all about finding a style that works for you and those glasses look perfect on you!

  19. She was so gorgeous. I read that Audrey Hepburn had a ton of problems with the way she looked, and it further goes to show that no matter what size you are, you need to learn to be comfortable with yourself, you know? And you look great!

  20. She is absolutely my favorite!!! I thought I had hit nirvana when I invested in the Marilyn Monroe Encyclopedia around ten+ years ago, but then a book came out that is so real - I literally have a bookmarker in it because after it made sense for me, out of everything I've read and researched, out of her mother, her mother's situation, in a way that I actually and finally understood how MM's childhood had come to be the way that it was, even how she wound-up with the name Norma Jean -- I just couldn't go on. My heart was just - broken. The book is currently in my storage locker; when/if I find it, I'll let you know the title - it's one of the more recently written ones, and it's not a fluff book, if that helps. Anyway - thank you again for this share!!!
